Live music photo review: The Wood Brothers played Red Butte Garden Thursday
New York City-based roots act, The Wood Brothers performed at Red Butte Garden Thursday in Salt Lake City. The trio consisting of siblings Chris (Medeski, Martin and Wood) and Oliver Wood along with multi-instrumentalist, Jano Rix are touring in support of their latest release, Heart is the Hero. The single “Pilgrim” is available to stream along with an accompanying video to give fans a taste of what’s to come from the group who have been making folk, jazz, roots rock and acoustic music for most of the last two decades.
From the band’s website in regards to the new material:
“The Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. For the better part of two decades, they’ve cemented their reputation as freethinking songwriters, road warriors, and community builders, creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who’ve grown alongside them through the years. That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero, the band’s eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies, Heart is the Hero is stocked with songs that target not only the heart, but the head and hips, too.”
Produced by Chris Wood, Oliver Wood, Jano Rix, and Brook Sutton the new record was recorded by Brook Sutton at The Studio Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee. Additional recording by Jano Rix, Evan Wilber, & Dan Davis took place at The Studio Nashville. The record was mixed by Trina Shoemaker at Dauphin Street Sound in Mobile, Alabama.
By all accounts the evening was a success with a mostly full venue on a hot Summer night amid breathtaking views of the nearby Wasatch Mountains encircling the Salt Lake Valley. Photographer, Ryan Odom was on hand to document the performance for The Cosmic Clash.
The Wood Brothers continue their tour through mid-August on a West Coast swing before taking a break before four nights at the Hillberry Music Festival in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. See the complete list of tour dates at the band’s website.
