Live music preview: Austin Psych Fest returns with some cool new wrinkles
April 27-30, Austin Psych Fest will make its official return on the 15th Anniversary of the inaugural event. Today, the festival has rebranded LEVITATION in order to take the pysch-rock festival beyond Austin. That event is now hosted at various music venues throughout the Red River Cultural District on Halloween weekend. The return of APF signals a return to the smaller format of the original fest at Far Out Lounge and Stage in South Austin. Headliners include Toro y Moi, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Cuco with some of the usual suspects like fest founders, The Black Angels, Crumb and Los Bitchos. With 32 acts on two stages over three days with no overlapping sets, this event aims to please the most discerning music fan.
If you’ve already perused the lineup poster, then you know Melody’s Echo Chamber (France) is slated for a rare appearance (the band has only played around 40 shows ever). Melody Prochet is a French artist who once had a relationship with Kevin Parker of Tame Impala. She’s currently touring new material as indicated in the clip above.
You may have also noticed acts like the red-hot Yves Tumor or Japan’s Acid Mother’s Temple on the bill alongside Hotel Vegas regulars, Annabelle Chairlegs and Daiistar. This bill is jam-packed with musical goodness. Per APF, “Austin Psych Fest brings the old school vibe of the original event back outdoors and under the stars and oak trees in the venue’s sprawling backyard.”
And that’s not all… The Cosmic Clash and our booking partner, Play to the Plants will be on hand as well, hosting the Yellow Stage and providing hospitality to artists in the green room. The Yellow Stage aka the Janis Stage will be adorned with exotic houseplants and succulents from Tillery Street Plant Company and East Austin Succulents. The plants on the stage will be available to the public for purchase. APF will also have a limited quantity of branded, 3-D printed pots on hand at the merch table along with vouchers to purchase discounted succulents to pair with their one-of-a-kind pot, created by Webb of Acid Dad exclusively for Austin Psych Fest. Fans will be able to find representatives from both TCC and PTTP on hand at the Yellow Stage and merch tables.
Besides three days of music at Far Out Lounge, the festival is also hosting an opening night party on Thursday, April 27 at Mohawk with NYC noise rockers and festival veterans, A Place to Bury Strangers. The Warlocks, Archer Oh, Blushing and Gift round out the bill. Limited tickets are still available for these performances. Grab them before they’re gone.
An extremely limited amount of three-day passes and single day tickets remain available for purchase. Yesterday, LEVITATION announced there are newly available single day tickets added as space was made available by organizers to release those tickets for sale. If you come, you’ll walk away with memories that are yours to keep forever.
A few important notes:
Far Out Lounge and Stage has limited parking available. Fest goers should plan on using ride share, carpool and public transportation to get to the venue. Organizers anticipate large crowds and encourage fans to arrive early to gain access to the venue and avoid long lines at entry.
The venue is all outdoor. Bring hats, lip balm, water bottles, maybe an extra pair of socks and a good attitude. Psych-rock fans are friendly and kind and encourage an “all are welcome” vibe at LEVITATION-sponsored events. Be nice, helpful and patient with others. It’ll make for a better experience for everyone.
