Song Premiere: Austin punks Death Party dropped first single Son of Sam today
Austin power-punk trio Death Party has announce the release of their first single, “Son of Sam” today. The song is available to stream on Spotify. The band plans to release a couple more singles before dropping a full album.
Emerging with an inclination for the punk-rock-pace of Jay Reatard and The Spits, Death Party is an Austin-based trio comprised of singer/guitarist Nicky (guitar/vox), Jake (drums), and Pedro (bass). Since forming in early 2022, the band has been hitting the underground scenes in Austin and San Antonio while writing and recording songs for their debut album.
Some folks may know Pedro Carvalho as one of the owners of award-winning music venue, Far Our Lounge and Stage What you may not know is Carvalho moved to Austin with a band originally. While he may have detoured into operating a music venue in an addition to a gastro-pub and other ventures, his first love is music. The man is rightfully excited about his new act, Death Party. We’re looking forward to seeing the band perform live in the near future after getting a taste with this new single.
While the group is not wrong about sounding inspired by The Spits, the percussive melody in this track that follows hard hitting bass and drums that punctuate the track sounds retro in a good way. “Son of Sam” sounds like a song that might have appeared in an episode of Beavis and Butthead during the golden age of MTV or even featured on Rikki Rachtman’s Headbanger’s Ball.
The track is fun just like this humorous promo clip Death Party made for today’s “Son of Sam” release. The clip begins with what looks like a retro scene with an older woman (Mom?) in the 80s getting ready to play her favorite Karen Carpenter wax while reading Erma Bombeck and drinking cheap red wine. The setting is kind of perfect as you’ll see below.
Death Party play The 13th Floor tonight with FOOLS and Mugdog. Doors are at 8 p.m.
