Interview: Austin artist Andrew Cashen discusses solo work, Austin music with Mike Cosmic

Guitarist Andrew Cashen is one of Austin’s most prominent musicians. His reputation as a songwriter goes beyond his music and the multiple bands he plays with, A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit, Tear Dungeon and his solo act. Cashen’s dangerous but exciting acrobatics has built a reputation amongst the Austin Scene. There seem to be no limits to his ride-or-die musicianship. This is why The Cosmic Clash asked him to talk to Mike Cosmic in a short but entertaining interview we shot at the home of our Editor, Greg Ackerman.

Andrew’s unique musical style has allowed him to build a world of music loved by many. His musicianship becomes clear with bands like Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit, Tear Dungeon, and his own solo work. The solo project is the one that got to open for Spoon at ACL Live last month. The bands are friends with each other as Cashen discusses in the interview below.

Cashen explains his reasons for pursuing solo work on his Bandcamp page: “After returning home from tour, Andrew experimented at writing lyrics. What started out as trepidation, grew into a reflective story of a man in love and the struggles of life’s growing pains. Inspired by Sam Cooke, through a compilation of strings, horns, and percussion, and ensemble of fifteen, Cashen captivates the listener on a magical journey of self exploration.

Interviewing Andrew Cashen lets you into his rock n roll world. He has become a refreshing force amongst Austin musicians as well as national touring acts like Spoon. In fact, Spoon has taken both his bands on tour with them. The experience left an impression on Cashen and his writing mate, Sabrina Ellis. Find tour dates and more information by following the songwriter’s bands on social media. Fans can find his solo work at Bandcamp.
