Live music preview: Recommended November shows aplenty in Austin this month

While we’re recovering from the monster Fall festival season which culminated in glorious four days of LEVITATION Fest our trusty contributor Christina DeStefano, went to work sussing out which of the hundreds of live music shows in November you should catch. If you consider that the average Austin evening presents something like 75-90 concerts a night, then you’ll understand that DeStefano and The Cosmic Clash has been doing some valuable, time-saving work in narrowing down the list of live music options in the ATX to something manageable. So… go forth, peruse our recommended November shows list, see concerts and buy local artist’s merch and records as we ease into the Holiday season. – Editor

November 9 – Preoccupations @ The Ballroom – Recently, the post-punk band self-released their album Arrangements. Drummer Mike Wallace does not shy away from experimenting while the guitar seeps to the depths. We’ve got our fingers crossed for The Parish’s recovery. Tickets

Sheverb 13th Floor residency dates

EVERY WEDNESDAY in November – Sheverb’s Psychedelic Wild West Residency @ 13th Floor – Acid Light Show by Underground Light Orchestra w/ Lizzie Looney – On a school night? Oh, you’re naughty. This might be one of the more convenient recommended November shows to plan for since it happens four times this month. Also a great option for a mid-week break from the routine.

November 10 – Wild Nothing w/ Hey Cowboy @ Far Out Lounge – Dream pop act Wild Nothing will play at Far Out Lounge. Michelle Williams’ spoken verse in “Paradise” captivates with her dreamy words: “Ah, that was it. The truth at last. Everything would have been love.” Tickets

November 11 – The Garden w/ Machine Girl @ Emo’s – When you expect brother duo The Garden to zig, they zag. Their tunes incorporate fast drum and bass with a mellower vocal approach in “Freight Yard”, while “Call This Number Now” does not take itself too seriously. Tickets

Weekend at Larrys square poster

November 10 -14 – Weekend at Larry’s @ All Over – Get tickets or don’t. They have first come first serve policy for this event. The Bad Larry’s Burger Club pop-up collaborates with other foodies. Pizza at Chess Club with sets by Nominee, Rare Bloom, BFF, and a mystery guest. On the 13th, Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol might be patrolling Hotel Vegas for their rounds. Tickets where needed

November 12 – FSG Fest @ Do we need to tell you? (Ok, it’s at FSG Records) – Benefits Austin Music Foundation. Vendors, food, drinks, DJs. Hosting Dead Meadow, Mike and the Moonpies, Kydd Jones, South Texas Tweek, Being Dead, and more! Tickets

November 12 – Lettuce @ Stubb’s – Oh, that is some funk right there. Tickets

Voxtrot at Mohawk 2022

November 12 – Voxtrot @ Mohawk – Wait, wait, wait…. These guys formed in Austin, Texas?! “The Start of Something” has high dance-ability for indie-pop. This may be the hottest ticket of our recommended November shows list. Act fast, night two is already sold out. Tickets

November 16 – Son Little @ 3Ten – Indulge in an intimate R&B show with Son Little crooning over a minimal band in “Lay Down”. With a nostalgic voice, Son Little updates the genre with his exceptional guitar work. Check out if you like Leon Bridges. Tickets

November 17 – Zebra Katz w/ MORENXXX @ Cheer Up Charlie’s – House mixed with rap at Cheer Up Charlie’s. “IN IN IN” conjures Missy Elliott verses: “I’m a head bangin’, dread havin’, hair swingin’, pants saggin’, ass shakin’, feet stompin’, is it all over my bass?”. Black and queer, Zebra Katz unabashedly goes for the jugular with his deep bass.  Check out if you enjoy Le1t or Missy Elliott. Tickets (Truly tucked somewhere on the dark internet).

November 17 – Oddisee & Good Company @ Mohawk – The vibes are completely different than next door at Cheer Ups. Lo-fi beats with breezy raps with a groovy undertone, Oddisee does not need to come up for air between verses.

Beach Fossils mohawk landscape poster

November 18 – Beach Fossils w/ Animals on TV @ Mohawk – Someone let bassist Jack Doyle Smith in the spotlight and he made a place in indie pop for Beach Fossils. Last year, the band released piano covers of their hits. Animals on TV won the Resound Presents competition of Texas based artists with their alternative tunes.

November 21 – Dumas, Masma Dream World, Fuck Money, Blank Hellscape @ Mohawk – Whoa. This is a metric fuckton of audio stimulation. Dumas delivers mellow French indie rock (from Quebec). Masma Dream World’s most recent album expects to bring a spiritual experience. Fuck Money hits HEAVY. Blank Hellscape: “THREE HEADS MAKING DARK TUNES” Tickets

November 21 – HYD w/ UMRU @ Cheer Up Charlie’s – Hyd expect to release their first album CLEARING on 11/11/22. Formerly a member of QT alongside SOPHIE (I’m still in mourning) and A.G. Cooke, Hyd’s hyper-pop production meshes with an ethereal voice, similar to that of Caroline Polachek. Check out if you are a fan of Purity Ring or any of the aforementioned artists. She’s all of them, all at once. Tickets

November 22 – Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin Performing Suspiria @ Paramount Theater – Campy cult classic scores of Suspiria played live. The movie celebrates its 45th anniversary at the Paramount with Simonetti’s Goblin. Goblin’s eerie beat strikes disturbingly off tempo with low growls slinking through. Every aspect of Suspiria is meticulously crafted. Tickets

November 29 – Men I Trust w/ Homeshake @ Emo’s – Keyboardist Dragos Chiriac and bassist-guitarist Jessy Caron met in high school and came together in 2014 to form the duo Men I Trust. In 2016, their lead singer Emma joined, adding a needed influence of gentleness to their tracks. Check out “Numb”. Tickets

November 29 – Bartees Strange w/ Pom Pom Squad & They Hate Change @ Empire Control Room and Garage – We love both of these artists. Bartees Strange opened for Car Seat Headrest back on Cinco de Mayo (link). Pom Pom Squad played a number of shows during SXSW that The Cosmic Clash covered (link). Grab tickets here.
