Live music preview: Mild High Club is coming to Mohawk September 24

Originally hailing from Chicago, Mild High Club founder Alexander Brettin began the project as a solo act, expanding the group into full band, live act as the project gained fans Brettin studied jazz at Columbia College in the Windy City and shortly after began his work on MHC. The Neo-jazz / shoe gaze / psych rock act will appear on the Mohawk stage September 24 with support from Shy Boys. The Cosmic Clash is thrilled to co-present this bill with Resound Presents. Tickets are available in advance directly from Resound.

Our first live experience with Mild High Club came as the result of severe storms which cancelled LEVITATION’s destination festival at Carson Creek Ranch in 2016 and moved it into downtown venues, mostly centered around the Red River Cultural District. Thus The Cosmic Clash found our reporter at Barracuda on 7th St. (now Creek & Cave Comedy Club) for a lineup that featured MHC as the group was ascending the musical ladder.

Mild High Club gained a larger audience after the release of their critically acclaimed collaboration, Sketches of Brunswick East with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in 2017. The Cosmic Clash has revisited those recordings as well as MHC’s 2021 release, Going, Going, Gone That recent release which the band is now touring expands upon the group’s original sound without straying too far from their Neo-jazz / psych foundation. The tracks become more interesting to experienced audiophiles who may be primarily seeking new, original ideas around these genres and Album Oriented Rock (AOR) which Brettin says influences his songwriting.

We discussed the latest studio effort with an Austin Mild High Club fan, April Stockwell who has this to say upon listening to the the recording again this week, “Definitely has that old school feel with a few more beep-boops and funny keyboard riffs. Some of it makes me think of Chicago and Steely Dan.”
