- August 6 – ATX Queer Music Fest – I cannot do justice to the fest preview we published yesterday.

August 6 – Leon Bridges @ Moody Amphitheater – Leon Bridges’ vocals hit notes that bring tears to my eyes. Bridges has brought his soulful harmonies to a variety of musicians, from Khruangbin on “Texas Sun” to ODESZA’s “Across The Room”. Grammy award-winner, Leon Bridges’s tracks features old soul you could swear it was a cover of “The River” or an old Sam Cooke record. https://moodycenteratx.com/

August 6 – Darkbird w/ Me Nd Adam @ Jester King Brewery – Indie-pop band Darkbird formed in Austin somewhere in the depths of Craigslist. Their track “Heartbeat” has given them popularity after being featured on Netflix’s Boo Bitch. this might be one of the better August shows to see. Recommended for listeners of Ghostland Observatory. – https://www.eventbrite.com/e/

August 12 – Father John Misty w/ Suki Waterhouse @ Moody Amphitheater – Father John Misty draws me in like a Pitchfork article: a brooding, sullen academic with at least some hint of cynicism. That being said, how lovely it would be to be serenaded by “Chateau Lobby #4” under the Texas night sky. https://www.ticketmaster.com/

August 12 – Ali Holder & Alanna Royale @ 04 Center – Resound Present’s Unreleased contender Ali Holder strums her guitar over dusty country ballads. The Austin Chronicle has described her music as “a breakthrough with brilliant, bruising confessionals and defiant, compassionate anthems, cutting the space between Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann.” https://www.04center.com/

August 13 – Foxing @ The Parish – Formed in 2011 after dissolution of a previous post-punk project Hunter Gatherer, several members reconvened to form Foxing. Colin Murphy has exquisite control over his voice within the first several seconds of “The Medic”. When he goes high, he goes high. In a hushed tone, Murphy sings “I I I want to be loved,” before the drums invite grit. https://www.prekindle.com/

August 16 – Local Natives @ ACL Live – Back in college, I swapped music with my friend Sarah. Sarah is a progressive Appalachian who loves listening to folk on long car rides. I received full albums, including “Gorilla Manor”. I frequently listened to “Sun Hands”, anticipating Kelcey Ayer to belt out “And when I can feel with my sun hands, I promise not to lose her again.” – https://www.ticketmaster.com/

August 17 – Resound & Cosmic Clash presents: L.A. Witch and Blushing @ The Parish – LA Witch hones the same energy as fictional band The Hex Girls. The sultry rock of “Kill My Baby Tonight” summons the angst of previous generations burned at the stake before. – Bonus: The Cosmic Clash is stoked to be co-presenting this show alongside Resound Presents for our first August show with the company. Come out and say hi! – https://www.prekindle.com/

August 18 – Florist w/ Marc Merza Group @ The Ballroom – Emily Sprague, Jonnie Baker, Felix Walworth formed Florist back in 2013. Sprague’s dainty, pixie voice lays over a finger picked guitar for dreamy songs that wrap you in sun beams. https://www.prekindle.com/

August 19 – Eric Tessmer Birthday Bash @ Antone’s – Eric Tessmer’s name is locally famous, known amidst those who frequent Red River. Described by Guitar World as “best kept six string secrets”, Tessmer branched out in 2020 with Rock N Roll Hall-of-Famer Nancy Wilson for a series of covers, including a grittier version of Depeche Mode’s “Policy of Truth”. https://www.ticketmaster.com/

August 24 – Joyce Manor w/ Citizen, Prince Daddy & the Hyena, Phony @ Far Out Lounge – If there exists post-punk, would there be post-pop punk? That’s a shower thought for another day. Amidst the Fueled by Ramen motifs, there’s something I cannot put my finger on that bridges the gap between Motion City Soundtrack and FIDLAR. https://www.prekindle.com/

August 27 – Fucked Up w/ The Umbrellas @ The Parish – Wow, what an impression the first thirty seconds of “The Other Shoe” was. It came up first on Spotify, so obviously had to check it out; there was these short bursts of sonic guitar chords, a delicate female voice singing “Dying on the inside”, then brash screaming into the mic. The group pays homage to the punk stomp genre with fast guitar riffs over chaos stirring drums. https://www.prekindle.com/

August 29 – Helado Negro @ The Mohawk – Years ago, Helado Negro opened for Mitski at the Mohawk. Helado Negro’s celebration of Latino heritage landed a spot in my playlist with “It’s My Brown Skin”. He stood center stage amidst two, what I can only describe as tinsel swamp monsters. “My skin glows in the dark, shines in the light,” he sings. https://mohawkaustin.com/

August 30 – Ghost w/ Mastodon & Spiritbox @ Moody Center – Check out the Grammy-winning theatrical rock group at the Moody Center. That wraps our list of August shows. See y’all out there. https://www.ticketmaster.com/
