Video premiere: [Exclusive] Ben Buck drops The Marquee with Boom Baptist

You know what makes us feel good? Hip-hop music made with love, commitment to the craft and a sense of humor. Remember in the 90s when groups like The Beastie Boys and Digital Underground with Shock G reigned MTV’s airwaves with clever, funny videos? Ben Buck’s humorous take on on his song, “The Marquee,” is out today as a premiere exclusive, only at The Cosmic Clash. The video’s official release date is December 16.

The clip was directed by Xavier Aguilar of Blkstripe with assistance from Heard Entertainment (Empire Garage and Control Room). It was shot on location at Antone’s Nightclub and Empire Control Room. You’ll notice in the video Buck is inside Antone’s Record Shop adjacent to Antone’s. That’s significant because Buck’s parents own the place. His father is longtime Austin musician Mike Buck. His step-mother is respected guitarist and singer Eve Monsees. His sister is Billie Buck of high-flying Austin punk band, Sailor Poon. Ben Buck has been immersed in music since day one to tell the truth.

After joking that since his sister chose punk and his parents play what is closer to Texas blues and more traditional forms of music, that he’d taken up the Hip-hop mantle because the fam needs to cover all the bases. While that’s not far from the real story, Buck elaborated, professing his love for The Beastie Boys and Wu-Tang Clan. He modestly admitted he was shooting for a sound that fell somewhere in between what those legendary acts have achieved.

Buck’s lofty musical goals only make us like the polite young man even more. Buck not only represents his remarkable Austin musical family well, the man represents the Austin music scene like a boss in this song and video he made with Andrew Thaggard, better known as producer and performer, Boom Baptist. The song is not only a throwback to a simpler era of Hip-hop, the chorus has a nice hook.

Buck inhabits a character not unlike himself is the vignette which depicts him working as a janitor at a nightclub, constantly being caught by his boss, day-dreaming about being a big rap star. The humorous slant is a nod to those great comical videos that populated much of the programming on MTV shows like Yo! MTV Raps with Ed Lover and Dr. Dre.
