Live music preview: Semihelix album release with my education and ThunderStars Saturday

Saturday at White Denim’s Radio Milk Recording Co. compound, local dream pop trio, Semihelix will celebrate the release of their first full-length album, Recoil. Joining the band on the bill are post-rock mainstays, my education and electro-psych duo ThunderStars. Coproduced by The Cosmic Clash and the studio, the event is the first of what hopes to be a local music series featuring some of the best artists in Austin. This weekend will set that standard with a diverse and talented lineup of acts.

Headliners Semihelix have been garnering steady praise for their Matt Gerhard-produced (Public Hi-Fi Studios, Spoon) record. The album is truly a gorgeous piece of music bolstered by bandleader, Geannie Friedman’s lovely vocals and strong lyrical content. This woman has a band and sound that music fans respond to in a meaningful way. It’s apparent at their performances The Cosmic Clash has covered previously.

Semihelix’s video for the title track has been featured on our site this month but here it is again because good music deserves a second look, right?

A DJ set by none other than James Petralli of White Denim will follow the performances which promise to be special. This show will be my education’s first in over 18 months. We’re particularly excited to present this act along with Semihelix as the band has been in our sights for almost 20 years. my education’s extensive catalog is nerd music gold to the folks over here at The Cosmic Clash. Anything this adept at moving fans without lyrics or histrionics has our attention.

The Cosmic Clash editor, Greg Ackerman will be a guest on KOOP’s Channel Surfing show Friday morning at 11 a.m. Listen at KOOP.org or on your radio at 97.1 fm. Ackerman will be talking a bit about the Semihelix album release party on Saturday, The Cosmic Clash’s other initiatives and music he’s been listening to lately.
