Video premiere: Austin synth duo Hamerzya released Ethereal Ones clip today
Hamerzya (pronounced hammer+z+eye+a) emerged in the Austin music scene in 2015, with Michael J. Peña as drummer and keyboardist and Lisa Marie Perkins on vocals. The self-produced band creates future synth, new wave melodies with brooding ballads, paying homage to the 1980s and Tron video games. Austin’s synth pop scene has grown exponentially since S U R V I V E’s debut on Netflix’s Stranger Things soundtrack. Today we’re introducing the premiere of the duo’s new video, “Etheral Ones.”
Hamerzya has taken a hiatus from playing live shows during the pandemic. Last October, the band participated in Elysium’s 48 Hour Livestream event, benefiting the music venue while in-person events were halted by the coronavirus. It may have been the last time the duo performed for any audience.
The band have spent the last year working on their upcoming record, Earth Rebirth. The album was expected to be released this Summer and finally drops next week. The record will feature thirteen tracks with the central and overarching theme of triumphing over personal conflict and fears front and center.
Their music video for “Ethereal Ones” is finally out in the wild today after a few unplanned production delays. As you’ll see, the wait was worth it. Directed by Eric Alaniz in Corpus Christi, Texas, the video gives off art film vibes and provides an excellent visual represention of the story. The track is off their anticipated album Earth Rebirth which is set to drop Thursday, September 30 right here at The Cosmic Clash.
Peña wrote the story line and asked us to include this synopsis with the video to explain the inspiration behind the song. It goes back to his childhood:
“Ethereal Ones, is a real-life story based on previous traumatic life events both Lisa and I
experienced separately. At age 6, I suffered a near-death drowning experience and was saved by
my eldest brother. Lisa, at birth, was found to have died in her Mother’s womb for nearly two
hours and by a miracle, came back to life. In writing a song such as Ethereal Ones, we needed to
have peeled back many layers and retraced years of emotions. To speak to the depth of our
personal battles, I (and on Lisa’s behalf) took a lyrical approach and carefully crafted our stories
into allegoric form. With newfound emotional balance, writing about the “emotional scars”, has
been liberating and provided a means of “therapy.” To sum it up, Ethereal Ones speaks to
anyone coping with similar experiences. We hope you find the same message of love, hope and
empowerment and resonate with our story.”
Hamerzya has released teaser photos of this well-made on a low budget, music video and two tracks off the album prior to today’s video premiere:
“Reflektions” was the first single released off the forthcoming disc, debuted way back in March 2019. The retro-wave track opens with heady, building percussion over a beautifully sung by Perkins ballad about facing your past.
“The Hitchhikers” is the second track from Earth Rebirth, released back in March of 2020. “The Hitchhikers” is an ambient followup to “Reflektions” with arcade game-like synths with slow, but prominent drums as Perkins sings about confronting her fears on the Road To Nowhere. Deep stuff for sure but beautiful music to help the listener along as they contemplate the running theme in this work.
