Video Premiere: Scott Collins gets nostalgic After the Show

Austin born and bred songwriter Scott Collins dropped a new EP Headed North July 2. That five-song EP premiered right here at The Cosmic Clash. Nearly three months to the day of that release date, we are sharing Collins’ new lyric video for his track from the new record, “After the Show.”

The story behind the song is a good one. The singer bonded with fellow musician Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit) after having a conversation with the bombastic front woman about the trials of being a woman on tour (Ellis now identifies as non-binary), delivering exhausting, high-energy performances just about every night. Collins believes his songwriting achieved more depth and creative growth as a result of his encounter with Ellis coupled with his effort to tell the story in a voice not entirely his own.

The tune has a bonafide hook. The chorus is solid. The song is just a good, pleasant listen. There is another appealing aspect of this tune, in that it’s subject matter is one of significance in this new era of the Me Too movement. We’ve heard this before from female artists… that touring as a woman presents its own set of challenges not unlike being discriminated against at the corporate office. It’s just the rock n roll version of that scenario.

Everybody holds you
Burnt spilled your soul
And the band is gone
But they never let you go

The track’s catchy lyrics include discussion of those shared experiences musicians have while touring on the road. Flopping on a friend of the band’s floor, using cocaine and the empty feeling artists get after the tour is over and their band mates return to their everyday life.

“After the Show” was recorded at Frenchie Smith’s The Bubble Recording Studio with multi-instrumentalist, Einar Pedersen providing additional song production. Alex Lyon mastered the recordings. Billie Buck created the album art. Grab your own copy of Collins’ “Headed North” here.
