Live music preview: Drummer Babes is coming back to Cheer-Up Charlie’s Thursday
Catch The Cosmic Clash’s end of Summer party, Drummer Babes at Cheer Up Charlie’s on August 29 (Thursday). This annual event features some of Austin’s best drummers. On this bill, each happens to be a badass woman too. The idea spawned several years ago when drummer (and TCC booker) Genesis Vasquez dreamed up the project. Now we’re back bigger than ever with a lineup that includes San Antonio’s Fea (Girl in a Coma side project) in addition to Being Dead, Nevil, The Boleys and Hey Cowboy. The show is being produced with the guidance of Austin booking maven and Austin Music Award-winner Trish Connelly of The Nothing Song.
Fea, a San Antonio-based quartet, belt out astonishing Chicana post-punk melodies in memorable bilingual fashion. Featuring talented drummer Phanie Diaz, formerly of popular punk act, Girl In A Coma, the group’s energetic performance is certain to exhilarate any live audience. Even Austin crowds dealing with hot, summer weather will have a hard time resisting jumping around to this dynamic band once signed by the legendary Joan Jett.
Come catch the eerie-trippy sounds of Being Dead, an Austin two-piece of which the members swap instrumental roles between guitar, keyboard, vox, percussion and vocals. The pair take a humorous approach to stage banter and performing which contrasts well with their intense, loud brand of rock n roll.
Check out the effortlessly delightful sonic musings of Nevil, an all-female trio producing a unique-yet-familiar psychedelic sound. The Hotel Vegas regulars make their first appearance at our Drummer Babes event and we couldn’t be more excited to have them perform.
The Boleys, originally from Florence, Texas, now working from their new Austin home, is a family trio consisting of a woman and her two brothers. Their live performances produce aural effervescence of trippy psych-rock, delivering a heavy dose of sixties nostalgia for an authentic neo-psych sound. Hey Cowboy‘s synth-pop sound experiments with bass-driven synth sounds, accompanied with precise percussion and ambient vocals. The trio exudes refreshing upbeat energy through very catchy melodies.
You can catch all five acts at the Drummer Babes showcase, brought to you by The Cosmic Clash and The Nothing Song for $5. Yeah, if you did that math that’s a $1 a band. There really is no better (and cost effective) way to spend a hot Thursday night than with percussive and fun to watch bands. The fun starts at 9 p.m. We’re looking forward to seeing y’all there.
