Song Review: Cowboy Diplomacy introduces “The Get Down”
Austin’s Southern Blues specialists, Cowboy Diplomacy returns with rollicking anthem “The Get Down.” “The Get Down” is the band’s first single since 2017. It’s the lead track from their upcoming debut album, slated for release in late 2019. Cowboy Diplomacy recorded “The Get Down” at Studio 601 in Austin with Eric Harrison and Michael Ingber.
What is “The Get Down”? That’s the question lead singer Ian Cochran asks on the smoldering rock jam. The answer is up to the listener. Do you choose vices and distractions or do you choose purpose? Cochran takes listeners on a journey of self-discovery and the lessons he’s learned from venturing down both paths. Those times of partying, drinking and being “out of control” as he describes it, left the singer feeling empty. “I didn’t feel like this person was a good person. I didn’t feel like this person was respecting other people. I didn’t and don’t want to be that person”
Coming to terms with “the real world” and what’s important helped Cochran get himself in check, as he committed to channeling his energy into positive things, most importantly his passion for music. “I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older” says Chochran, “that ‘the get down’ can have a different meaning. It can mean having self-control and self-discipline. Learning from others. Taking care of your responsibilities. Being healthy. Taking care of your body. Keeping your mind strong and filling it with knowledge. Getting better at your craft. Doing whatever it is you have to do to become great. Being kind and respectful to everyone. Loving everyone.”
As the song builds and swells, Cochran challenges the listener to find and pursue their passion as he sings, “fight for the funk running through your bloodstream…Maybe it’s time to live your life.”
