Live music preview: LSD and the Search for God and The Telescopes at Cheer Up Charlie’s tonight – The Cosmic Clash

It may seem absurd to you that we periodically come here to tell you music-loving reader about a band you’ve maybe heard of, then exhort y’all to head out to a local venue to catch said act. Today however, you should sit up and take notice. Fringe psych rock act from San Francisco, LSD and the Search for God return to Cheer Up Charlie‘s nearly a half year after our first experience witnessing the sonic assault the guys in the band put upon the small crowd on hand inside the club that night. Simply put, our faces melted. Goo came out of our ears and hair stood on the backs of our necks. Perhaps we’re going too far over the top but we want to ensure you understand why.  If you’re a trippy music kind of person, gear head, music nerd or all of the above,  you should not miss this affordable show in Austin tonight.

2016’s Heaven is a Place is as good an album to start on as any in the group’s ten year discography. The five-song EP begins with what sounds like a grandiose introduction befitting a band with a moniker as presumptuous as theirs. After a few listens, it will become clear that these men are experts in their craft, weaving a sonic tapestry of sounds for music nerds to obsess over. Add some exceptional guitar work by Chris Fifield and Andy Liszt over the shoegazey elements of the music and you get hypnotic, transcendent tracks that you wish would go on forever.

Also on the bill are English space rockers The Telescopes. Founded by Stephen Lawrie in 1987, the group cites local psych rock hero Roky Erickson among their influences. While the group has technically been active since the late 80s, the band effectively took a hiatus from 1992-2002 when they did not release any new material until the record Third Wave dropped in 2002. While we’ve not delved deep into their catalog, we expect the UK outfit’s performance to be no less compelling than their American counterparts in LSDATSFG who kick things off at 10:30p followed by The Telescopes at 11:30p and local act, Soda Lillies at 12:30.
