Album Review: Sunwolf – Beyond The Sun
Well over a month ago in October, I received an email form the band Sunwølf out of Leeds, UK. They asked if I would review their upcoming album Beyond The Sun, OUT NOW.
So here is what I think of the all mighty Sunwølf and their trip Beyond The Sun.
Who is this Sunwølf?
Sunwølf is composed of Dominic Deane Drummer/Organist and Matt Carringston Guitarist/Sampler from across the Pond from a little town known as Leeds. They can be described as an instrumental minimalist, Drone, Stoner , Mercury Program meets Modest Mouse while listening to Sabbath on a Morphine trip.
The epic tale of Beyond The Sun.
Genesis – The properly named song Genesis slowly rolls in with the droning sound of sweet guitar distortion building the foundation for the anticipation as we travel into Solar. Solar is filled with the warmth of clean guitars, beating drums and the familiarity of the Drone that seems to hold it all together. Morose Land is my favorite track on the album because it’s the attack. Loud Guitars, the pace picks up and the most important part, it’s loud and heavy!
Beyond The Sun reaches that cool creepy metal sound that sometimes wants you to feel sick and lost. Very cool! This themed album continues with musical adjective, Inertia. This track seems to be in an unchanging state by letting the sound waves merely exist. Before you know it Time Stands Still catches up with the vibrating of the organ and the fumbling of a stringy sounding guitar, makes for a cool desolate feeling. This track is pretty cool when you are out walking in busy bustling downtown headphones turned up, makes for a live soundtrack that totally contradicts.
Home, a very sweet end to the journey Beyond The Sun, the repeating patterns that become familiar while the organ invites you in for a cup of tea.
Don’t be expecting any complicated guitar solos, drum beats or crazy Doors like organ solos either. Sunwølf is sound twisted by the imagination of Deane and Carrington using just a couple of instruments. Beyond The Sun makes for a cool journey and in my book, is a very sweet album. Sunwølf holds their own and rocks out. Two words , Own It!
