Live music preview: Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids is coming to 13th Floor

I have a deep love for The Get Up Kids. Their 1999 classic Something to Write Home About is an all-timer for me—one of those records that somehow still hits the same decades later. (I’ve been caught hoarse-singing along to “Action-Action” more than once in my life.) Live music review: Emo originals Cap n Jazz played Mohawk last Monday

The Midwest Emo Kinsella dynasty feels everlasting in 2025. For this outing, the emo originals Cap’n Jazz made their way to Mohawk in the Red River Cultural District on Monday night to assert a legacy that proved undeniable for an endless gauntlet of bands that came after them. The venue which holds over 7,000 fans came close to selling out which says a lot about how this fringe but influential punk band from California garnered so much attention when they reformed last year.

Jawbreaker is often cited as a precursor to more popular Emo bands Dashboard Confessional, Fallout Boy and Face to Face. The latter two often cite Jawbreaker as an influence. The group is perhaps the most influential band most people haven’t heard of. Yet, the Blake Schwartzenbach-led act is much more than just an Emo punk originator.

Live music review: The Darkness and Diarrhea Planet thrilled fans at Emo’s – The Cosmic Clash

It may not have been a sold-out crowd but Emo’s fans were enthusiastic in their response to the UK neo-metal act, The Darkness and opener, Diarrhea Planet last week.  It was hard not to match the energy of DP’s opening set. The Nashville-based garage punks look like they’re having a better time than the drunk fans in the front row as they rocked their way through a brief half-hour set.
