Song review: Rene Chavez released Spirit Eyes second track from new album
Austin musician Rene Chavez, recently released a new single “Spirit Eyes” title track off Chavez’s recent release Spirit Eyes. The track is the second single from his latest record. The two new tracks are an expansion to Chavez’s discography which could be found on his Bandcamp.
“Spirit Eyes” kicks off with a scratching effect swiftly enveloped by a blend of 80s and early 2000s-style synthesizers, driven by a laid-back, catchy hook. The vocals flow like a journey along a vast country road, accompanied seamlessly with the opening lyric, “I don’t believe in taking all of your chances.” Although the track starts off with vocals steering into lo-fi territory, the chorus takes us to a different path adding to the chill vibes emanating from the tune.
Although the song clocks in at 3:39, it feels as if there was not enough time to fully grasp the emotion presented. It plants an idea that germinates in the brain as music fans digest it’s meaning. Every time the song is played back, it add’s a bit more clarity for the listener, revealing deeper layers of sonic palette and lyrical significance with each listen. This is the hallmark of good songwriting and Chavez has a firm grasp on the fundamentals of telling a story through song while presenting music in his own words and musical notes.
Chavez is formerly of Latin Cumbia fusion band, Como Las Movies serving as lead vocalist and guitarist for several years before moving on to focusing on production work and his own material. The Austin musician currently works as a producer at KUTX radio located on the University of Texas campus. Chavez is a BMI artist who has been featured on the publishing rights company’s Texas Ten Spotify playlist previously.
On the B-side, there’s a deft, bedroom-pop interpretation of Robert Plant’s “Big Log,” featuring La Beaky (also known as Victoria Chavez). The singer is Chavez’s frequent collaborator and wife. She takes the lead vocal on this cover with Latina style that’s all hers. Look for the duo to begin performing live again in early 2024.
