Song Premiere: Austin act The Sour Notes dropped Middle Distance this month

While Austin’s powerhouse indie rock outfit, The Sour Notes, is gearing up to release a new album, The Cosmic Clash is proud to premiere the first single “Middle Distance”.  The track is mixed by Steve Christensen and mastered by Joe LaPorta who’s worked on every Sour Notes song. Their longterm musical relationship solidifies the band’s sound. The sonic partnership take them from a good band and elevates them to a great recording act.

The Sour Notes have been making music in Austin for some time and are getting close to writing a hundred songs! Reaching a milestone like that is a sign of committed music writing, musicianship and a driven creative leader in Jared Boulanger.

“Middle Distance” is the first track to feature an all-instrumental composition for The Sour Notes. Leaving out the vocals is a refreshing departure from their usual song structure. Although the band is known to have drawn-out jam sessions in their music, found in past albums and songs such as (Parallel Action, More Contour, and Loose Ends). “Middle Distance” becomes a sort of aural, psychedelic trip. Boulanger’s guitar playing is spectacular, to say the least.

It is no surprise the band put together such a catchy tune, displaying the innovation and power that makes them great. Clocking in at just over a minute and a half, “Middle Distance” begins with a commanding beat, followed by a traditional mid-90’s guitar riff (think Oasis), filled in by synth, all brought together by a steady bass line.

Boulanger brings it all together with his signature guitar riffs. The song is simple but moving, proving that less can, indeed, mean more. “Middle Distance” would easily make it into an indie film score adding to a scene’s emotional peak. The track ends as it began, with the drums clocking in and clicking out. The song paves the way for The Sour Notes’ next album neatly while setting the proper expectations of their listeners.

Boulanger offered his take on the song, “In Middle Distance, the guitar hook in the chorus is big and kind of lyrical… so we were able to rely on four instruments interacting simply together with the right parts. I hope you dig it!”
