Live music preview: Semihelix bandleader Geannie Friedman to play BLK Vinyl solo in-store

After a successful dry run with Go Fever last weekend at East Austin’s BLK Vinyl‘s first outdoor show, the venue is hosting their second such event this Sunday, October 17. This time the in-store guest is Semihelix bandleader, Geannie Friedman who is playing a solo set to promote her debut full-length record release. The new album, Recoil dropped October 1 on the Mariel Recording Company label. The free-to-the-public event begins at 6 p.m. All ages are welcome as was the case at last week’s launch party.

Friedman has quietly been building momentum with Semihelix’s latest studio effort which was recorded with Public Hi Fi’s (JIm Eno, Spoon) sound engineer, Matt Gerhard. The recording turned out like you’d expect with a pedigree like that. It’s become a favorite platter among staff at The Cosmic Clash offices. So much so, our site founder, Mike Cosmic joined the band as bassist recently. He’ll make his first appearance with Semihelix next week at Radio Milk Recording Company with guests, my education and ThunderStars.

The record has also garnered attention from far flung music blogs in the UK as well as stateside. Locally, the Austin Chronicle recommended the 10/23 album release party as their top pick. It’s no wonder with great songs like the title track, “Recoil.” Not only did the band make a fantastic dream pop song, but the stop-motion animated video works well with the music. More shows from Semihelix are soon to be announced as well according to Friedman. in the meantime, catch us at the BLK Vinyl in-store this Sunday.
