Girls Rock Austin to hold Rockarama camp this summer
Girls Rock Austin will hold GRA Camp Rock-A-Rama as a virtual event this year from Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16 this summer with a livestream showcase by campers on Saturday, July 24 at 1 p.m. The organization has done much to move forward young women interested in live music performance in an underrepresented market. The founders of Girls Rock Austin know that the barriers to succeed in music are much greater than those of female musicians’ male counterparts and seek to level the playing field for those young women, trans and non-binary kids.
The five-day virtual camp will include the Rock-A-Rama Morning Show hosted by GRA Executive Director Jamie Bahr and GRA Program Director Madison Whitaker, live instrument instruction, engaging workshops, instructional videos, band practice, and lunchtime musical performances by women, trans and non-binary artists. Find the online application at the GRA website to enroll.
Austin-based rock band Spoon has participated in Girls Rock Austin’s program in the past as have many other Austin musicians. Check out the PBS Newshour segment below to learn more about GRA and how they empower young women through their vital work.
GRA provides musical instruments and equipment to any camper in the Austin area who needs them and instrument instruction for campers of all skill levels by knowledgeable educators and mentors. Campers will also have access to a digital audio workstation and GRA’s exclusive online platform to create the work to be showcased on July 24.
In addition to receiving instruction on musical performance and songwriting, campers ages 8-17 will learn about self-esteem, working with others in the creative process, assertiveness and building confidence. Many come away from the experience with mentor and peer bonds that endure for years after camp.
Please visit the GRA website to access the program application form. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Complete GRA’s application to get approved.
