Video Premiere: The Sour Notes take it DIY with Peak

What we love about Austin’s The Sour Notes is how quirky the band is. Their off-kilter approach is in reality a reflection of the band’s founder, Jared Boulanger who writes and composes all of the group’s material. In a larger sense, the band’s DIY approach is reflected in this clip for their song “Peak”. We’ve been longtime fans of the indie act. In fact, we booked them for our Valentine’s Day event in February at Far Out Lounge before quarantine life stopped live shows in the near future.

The video was made by a longtime fan of the Austin outfit known as “Matzoh.” The Toronto native latched onto The Sour Notes early on. He attended their debut SXSW performance in 2010, eventually hosting the group at his home during NXNW Music Festival. Having him to direct the video was a no-brainer for Boulanger.

Using footage shot in the 80s, Matzoh produced a clip that feels nostalgic, matching the tone of the song which begins with a driving beat and heavy, fuzzy guitar that transports the listener back in time a bit. The track feels like it could have easily been conceived in the late 80’s or early 90’s. Boulanger’s vocal delivery fits well with song. It’s a great little rock n roll tune.

If you like the track and video, consider supporting The Sour Notes by heading over to their Bandcamp page. There is a ton of music and some cool swag to grab. While The Sour Notes are still making music and videos, they’re not playing live shows (their primary source of income). You can help by buying stuff from them while we wait out the Coronavirus Crisis.
