Live music preview: White Denim’s Radio Milk Recording hosting Grateful Dead Kids Show April 7

Fresh off a successful South By Southwest (SXSW) the members of White Denim are preparing to host the first Grateful Dead-themed kids show on Sunday, April 7 at their new Radio Milk Recording Company studio in East Austin which officially opened at the beginning of the year although it’s been operating for almost two years.

Billed as the Radio Milk Wrecking Crew, performing artists will perform songs of The Grateful Dead for adults and children alike. White Denim founder and lead guitarist, James Petralli has confirmed he’ll be sitting in on few songs but, ” mainly keeping the bubble machines running,” he said with a smile.

The family friendly affair, will feature two shows, the first 11 a.m. and then an afternoon set at 1 p.m. Activities include face painting, dancing and bubbles in the remodeled backyard of an historic building that dates back over 100 years. Word has it the building was once a neighborhood general store.  Complimentary drinks for both adults and children will be provided. Advance tickets are available directly from the band here. Space is limited at the studio so grab your tickets now if you’re considering going.

We’ve seen Petralli play Grateful Dead tunes before and it’s something every music fan should see, not just the kids as this bill might otherwise lead you to believe. Basically the guy shreds guitar on the level of Jerry Garcia. We caught the gifted guitarist at Threadgill’s last year with Austin Dead cover band, Deadeye. The performance was both masterful and a really fun show. Check out a bit of the performance below.
