Video premiere: SoundMass dropped first single off Ampersand – Let’s Get Doom

If you’re familiar with post rock and you’ve been around Austin for a minute then you may have heard of the group, my education, a long-running act who recently toured with Acid Mother’s Temple. You may be less familiar with their work with Salt Lake City band, Theta Naught called SoundMass which combines the two bands into one giant, symphonic post rock collective. The project dropped their first single from last year’s, effort, SoundMass III: Ampersand.  The new video for the track, “Let’s Get Doom” introduces the new record to fans as it’s the first track on the recording.

Comprised of live shots of the band presumably performing last July when SoundMass conducted a short four-city tour of Texas to promote the new record, the video begins showing the band performing live with their two drummers facing each other. The live band setup is actually pretty cool, evoking a cool, hip version of a rock orchestra of sorts.  The live shots are interspersed with various effects treated video and still clips meant to covey the deep emotions stirred by the rousing song which begins gently, gradually increasing tempo and intensity until the dramatic, stirring conclusion which signals the apex of the inspiring song.

The members of SoundMass stems from a list of exceptional musicians like drummer Lisa Cameron of ST 37, another project of my education member, Scott Telles (bass). Listeners will hear my education member James Alexander’s viola in the mix along with guitar work from Chris Hackstie as well as lead guitarist Brian Purrington. Other members of the collective include; Ryan Stanfield (bass, percussives, noise), Hayden Fritchley (drums and percussive), Earl Bowers IV (Drums and percussives), Vincent Durcan (Drums and percussives), Kirk Laktas (keyboards), Layne Rogers (cello), Chazz Miceli (guitars). It’s a sprawling group for songs that sound grandiose and ambitious.

SoundMass has been announced an official act at SXSW this March. While their Sx schedule has not been announced yet, we’ll let you know the band will appear at The Cosmic Clash and Play to the Plants Psychedelic Plants Clash 3 at 13th Floor on March 11. Full band announcement and details coming soon.
