Song review: Being Dead prepares for a new era with new single and video Muriel’s Big Day Off

Being Dead is an Austin band, but to say they’re simply a local indie rock band would be selling them short. When songwriting duo Falcon Bitch and Gumball plug in to play, their voices go together immaculately. With the songwriting chops and dynamic chemistry displayed on every song the band has ever recorded. Being Dead’s new single, “Muriel’s Big Day Off” revitalizes and hones what makes Being Dead something to watch in 2023.

The trebly guitars and vocal harmonies that ring throughout the track are a joy-filled outline for the lead single of Being Dead’s new record When Horses Would Run due out this Summer on July 13.

For Being Dead, every gig is special. The band is dialed in and all-around wild. On the 2018 track “Wild Man,” the duo is howling like wild animals throughout, and on “Apostles Prom,” the droning psychedelic apathy is in-your-face apparent. “Muriel’s Big Day Off” is no exception. In the verses, Gumball and Falcon Bitch show their wholehearted passion in a sea of summer-time bliss. The “Ooooos” on this track are glorious and might make you want to share a cocktail with the pair on the beach. The music video, directed by Falcon Bitch, is a trippy presentation that chronicles the titular character’s journey as explained in the track’s delightedly care-free lyricism.

When the chorus hits, Being Dead switches gears into a sheer synopsis. “Her name was spelled…. Like This M-U-R-I-E-L,” the pair shouts in unison. The synchronized clapping is also a vibrant participatory affair. The bridge that takes the track into utter mayhem is also a sick touch that shows Being Dead being right on brand and evolving on the same front. Being Dead is a master of hellishly hectic outros, as it feels like they want you to feel rattled after each track they commit to tape. This type of epic finish can also be heard in the outro of the catchy-as-hell “Underworld,” whose outro descends into a distorted psychedelic landslide of pure madness. Being Dead aren’t repeating themselves. They’re evolving and staying true to themselves. When Summer rolls around, Being Dead’s debut full-length record will soundtrack another sweaty summer. Let’s pour some boozy lemonades and drink about the new Being Dead single.
