Safer Together is part of the Travis County DA Office’s ongoing strategy to reduce the number of overdose-related deaths in the area. Travis County witnessed over 300 deaths from preventable overdoses in 2021, a more than 25% increase from just two years prior. The forecast for this year hasn’t improved as Travis County saw overdose deaths double in the first six months of 2022 alone compared with 2021.

“We must continue to treat substance abuse disorder as the public health issue it is in order to prevent overdose-related deaths and keep our community safe. This includes community-based strategies and campaigns that increase public awareness and connect our most vulnerable communities with life-saving resources,” said Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “We look forward to partnering with local leaders and non-profits to save lives in our community.”

Donations will be accepted upon entry at the concert event, fans are also encouraged to text SIMS to 44321; use PayPal via info@simsfoundation.org; or visit simsfoundation.org/donate to make a donation to the local nonprofit before the concert begins.

“RRCD (Red River Cultural District) remains committed to increasing education and awareness around the growth of substance use disorders and overdoses in our community. Together as leaders, community-based health experts, musicians, venue owners, and small businesses who have been touched by this crisis we hope events like Safer Together open conversations and action towards removing the stigmas and creating a pathway for change. We’re proud to work alongside our partners, appreciate our musicians and venue hosts, and encourage our community to donate to this important cause” said RRCD Interim Executive Director Nicole Klepadlo.

A press conference will precede Safer Together at Mohawk on Thursday afternoon at the venue with representatives from all three organizations present as well as local, county and state government leaders to support mental health initiatives and increase awareness of needed recovery and preventative measures to avoid a growing number of accidental overdoses caused by fentanyl and other issues around recreational drug use.
