Slug Guts – Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat – The Cosmic Clash

Slug Guts are a species of Australian rodent native to the Brisbane swampland as well as other low-lying damp regions such as cemetery marshes and flooded bar bathrooms. Behavior is nocturnal. Approach Slug Guts with caution.

Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat is Slug Guts newest release by way of Sacred Bones. The band was birthed in the dark somewhere around 2009 and like any reproducing creature in heat immediately put out 2009’s Down On The Meat. Last year the good doctors at Sacred Bones Records delivered Howlin’ Game making this month’s Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat their third brood of the litter.

The album continues the band’s tradition of gothic sauciness. If anything, the swagger they typically walk in has become only more sexual and terrifying. Much like their Australian predecessors The Birthday Party in fact, but beautifully exaggerated in the way of pert, godless, inebriation. Similarities can also be made with The Bad Seeds, but with time I think we’ll see them befouling a newspaper pile that’s solely theirs. The rate at which they’ve matured into these grisly sewer demons insures that the sourness of age will only refine them into the most perfect of poisons.

A Slug Guts live show seems to be something to drop out into and lose your shit on. At seven players they offer a spectacle of haunted ambiance and drive and I imagine their pub renditions of Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat just crawling with layers of goodness.
